In vivo, Reverses transcriptases, which are found in the virion, catalyze the synthesis of proviral DNA from the virion's RNA genome at the onset of the infection process.
The primary in vitro application of reverse transcriptase is in the production of cDNA copied from RNA, this is the first step of the well known RT-PCR system to generate the DNA template required for thermostable DNA polymerases.
