Alternative choices
Calcein, AM is widely used for determining cell viability. In living cells the non-fluorescent calcein, AM is hydrolyzed by intracellular esterases into the strongly green fluorescent anion calcein. The fluorescent calcein is well-retained in the cytoplasm in live cells.
